1. Market Overview: High-Base Dip in August, Steady YTD Growth
Based on registration data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Malaysia's passenger car registrations reached 77,277 units in August 2026, down −2.2% from 78,979 units in August 2025. Last August was the second-highest month of H2 2025, so the base was high; moreover, August 2026 included two federal holidays — Maulidur Rasul (Aug 25) and National Day (Aug 31) — leaving only 19 working days (21 last year). Sales still held the 77k mark, the third-highest monthly result of 2026.
Cumulatively, 566,628 units were registered in Jan–Aug 2026, up +2.7% from 551,482 units in the same period of 2025. August's single-month dip is a normal pullback against a high base; YTD growth remains steady. Reaching 900k for the full year would require ~83k per month from September to December — challenging but not impossible (July proved the 80k level is attainable).
Bottom line: August sales of 77,277 units (−2.2%) — a modest pullback on a high base and holiday effects; BEV registrations hit 8,833 units with an 11.4% share, a new 2026 high (the e.MAS 5's 4,770 units the core driver); Proton surged +37.7% while Perodua and Toyota struggled; electrified share reached 17.9%, more than double last year's 8.1%.
2. Monthly Trend: 2026 vs 2025 (Jan–Aug)
The first eight months of 2026 followed a strong-open, dip, recovery, peak, trim pattern: January started strong (+26.1%), Feb–Mar eased on Chinese New Year and the early Ramadan, April onwards recovered month by month, July peaked at 80,030 units, and August trimmed back to 77,277 units on 19 working days (two fewer YoY) and a high base — still the third-highest month of the year.

The iCaur V23 iWD went on sale in Malaysia in November 2025 and moved to local CKD assembly in 2026; JPJ lists it under both “V23” (from July 2026) and “iCaur V23”, so this table and every model ranking merge the two aliases.
9. Fuel Mix: BEV Monthly Share Tops 11% for the First Time
In August 2026, BEVs registered 8,833 units — share up to 11.4%, an all-time monthly high in the JPJ series (just 4.4% in August 2025); electrified (BEV+HEV+PHEV) share reached 17.9%, more than double last year's 8.1%. ICE Petrol share fell from 85.9% to 77.8%.
Fuel Type Monthly Share (Jan–Aug 2026, % stacked)
On a 2026 YTD basis, BEV registered 47,508 units (8.4% share), HEV 22,226 (3.9%), PHEV 12,736 (2.2%). August's historic BEV breakthrough was driven mainly by the e.MAS 5 (4,770 units, ~54% of the month's BEVs) plus Tesla's quarter-end push; local brands have taken over as the second growth engine beyond Chinese brands.
Top 10 BEV models — counted at the (model × powertrain) row level; only rows with fuel = BEV are included, so PHEV rows are excluded. e.MAS 5 led in August with 4,770 units, about 54.0% of the month's total BEV volume.

11. Conclusion & Outlook
Overall, three clear trends emerged in August 2026: (1) electrification crossed the tipping point — BEV monthly share topped 11% for the first time, and the e.MAS 5's volume proves the RM50k-class BEV has gone mainstream; (2) the landscape is reshuffling fast — Proton's full-year share could challenge 25%, its gap to Perodua narrowing month by month, while the Japanese big three (Toyota/Honda/Mitsubishi) lost ~4,200 units combined YoY in August; (3) the 900k full-year target is under pressure — +2.7% YTD growth implies ~83k/month from September to December; if Sep–Oct hold at the 77k–80k level, the full year will most likely land at 870k–890k.
