Based on registration data from the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ), July 2026 passenger car registrations reached 80,030 units, up +5.8% from 75,663 units in July 2025 — the highest monthly total so far in 2026 (previously April's 77,819).
Cumulatively, 489,340 units were registered in Jan–Jul 2026, up +3.6% from 472,492 units in the same period of 2025. The market is expanding moderately; July's surge was driven by new model launches and the start of the H2 peak season.
Bottom line: July sales of 80k hit a new 2026 high (+5.8% YoY); local duo Perodua/Proton hold ~61% combined share while Chinese brands (BYD, Jetour, Great Wall, etc.) keep surging and electrification accelerates. Sedans remain the best-selling body type (56.3% share), followed by SUVs at 28.4%.
2. Monthly Trend: 2026 vs 2025 (Jan–Jul)

In July 2026, BEVs registered 6,937 units — share up to 8.7% from 3.7% a year earlier; electrified (BEV+HEV+PHEV) share reached 15.8%, more than double last year's 6.9%. ICE Petrol share fell from 87.1% to 79.7%.
Fuel Structure Monthly Trend (Last 12 months, Aug 2025 – Jul 2026, in thousands)

Top 10 BEV models — counted at the (model × powertrain) row level; only rows with fuel = BEV are included, so PHEV rows are excluded. e.MAS 5 led in July with 2,402 units, about 34.6% of the month's total BEV volume.

11. Conclusion & Outlook
Overall, three clear trends emerged in July 2026: (1) a higher sales plateau — 80k in a single month, with the full year on track to approach 900k; (2) accelerating Chinese brand penetration — Jetour, Great Wall, BYD, Leapmotor and others still growing double-digit from a high base and taking multiple spots in the SUV/MPV top 10s; (3) electrification shifting from introduction to volume — BEV monthly share nearing 9%, and the e.MAS 5 (the first local-brand BEV SUV) proving local brands can deliver EVs at scale.
Methodology note: based on JPJ monthly registration data, passenger cars only (commercial vehicles excluded); VANs merged into MPV (matching the interactive tool); model grades follow MAA classifications (dominant variant, A–E bands); models absent from MAA are estimated from dimensions and public sources (MY convention), with pickups/vans tagged by body type; crossovers (e.MAS 5, Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, HR-V, Harrier, RX, WR-V) and Veloz reclassified to SUV/MPV per MAA; e.MAS 7 BEV/PHEV combined; prices are manufacturer suggested retail ranges.
